Meet your host!
 |
Carl Smith is a Louisiana native. He attended high school in
the Cajun / bayou country about 20 miles from "town", as New
Orleans is called there. During his college days at Loyola
University on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans, he
remembers taking the streetcar - the same ones which operate
on the same route today - to the (French) Quarter to hear
jazz in the then newly opened Preservation Hall or to hop
the bars on Bourbon Street.
After graduating from Loyola, Carl spent a
year in Germany as a Fulbright student. This year
changed his life, as he met the woman he would marry there.
After completing graduate school at the University of
Maryland (Ph.D. in physics), the two moved to Germany, where
Carl taught at German "gymnasiums" (a cross between a prep
school and a junior college, if you can imagine that!). He
has two sons, who both live in Europe.
After his
divorce, coming out and meeting his now ex-life partner,
Ulrich Ethan, Carl's visits to the US became much more
frequent, and plans soon developed to retire from teaching
and open a b&b in New Orleans. It took a while to realize
this dream, but now you can be part of it!
Carl now operates the Burgundy Bed and
Breakfast with the help of his new partner, Kem, and the sweet little chihuahua
he is holding in this picture, Gizzy.
